PI4J applauds and supports the establishment of the UK’s Ukraine language support task force, a positive collective response to the rapidly developing need for Ukrainian into English language support in the UK by the Institute of Translation and Interpreting (ITI), the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL), the National Register for Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), the Association of Translation Companies (ATC), the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC UK & Ireland), and Charity Translators.
This task force will make a valuable contribution in assisting Ukrainian people forced to flee the country. Making Ukrainian-English templates for the most commonly needed documents for visa applications freely available will hopefully speed up this process; whilst the UK’s Ukrainian communities will greatly welcome the opening of channels of communication to assist them.
Bringing together and signposting resources for free language support and the dissemination of information is as vital and important a response to the humanitarian crisis as are the lorry loads of supplies which are now regularly leaving our shores.
Further information can be found on the on the Charity Translators website which lists links to initiatives and resources to support those affected by the war in Ukraine. This is updated continuously.
The Council of Europe has published a host of resources aimed at supporting the linguistic integration of refugees from Ukraine in public services, schools, and the workplace:
